Winter Tires in Brampton, ON

Winter Tires VS All-Season Tires

All-season tires are just fine for many parts of the country, but like the name suggests, all-season tires are really a compromise in the end. They can offer good traction in wet weather and adequate performance in light snow, but…when the snow starts piling up, you just cannot count on all-season tires to get you where you need to go.

That’s where winter tires come in.

You might remember winter tires as the heavy, noisy, clunky “snow grips” that were on your dad’s Buick wagon a generation ago. Those days are gone, though. Today’s winter tires rival the best all-season or touring tires when it comes to handling, noise, steering response, ride quality and road manners.

Modern winter tires are designed with a tread compound that stays flexible in cold weather – the last thing you want is a stiff, unresponsive tire that can’t connect and deliver traction in snow and ice. They also feature a more aggressive tread pattern with deeper grooves designed for winter traction by evacuating snow and slush from the tire’s footprint to avoid hydroplaning. Winter tires also incorporate a network of sipes, tiny slits that help by offering hundreds of more biting surfaces to dig in and claw their way through snow and slush.

If you’ve really got to get through in tough winter weather, you may want to consider studded tires. Studded tires come pre-drilled with holes that make it easy for a technician to hammer in small metal studs for extra traction on slush, ice, and snow. Studs should, of course, be removed once the weather and roads clear up.

One thing to remember about winter tires, however. Your winter tires shouldn’t be used in temperatures above 40-45 degrees Fahrenheit. They’re softer, more flexible rubber formulation will begin to wear very quickly in warmer temperatures, shortening tire life.
